Events and Media

During our 3-year-long project, we organized community events with our partners in Santa Cruz County. Our team documented these celebrations of immigrant families and community advocates.

The United States fashions itself a nation of immigrants. In Santa Cruz County, immigrant families are an essential part of our history and our fabric. Yet a shifting national political climate often scapegoats immigrants, unjustly blaming them for wider social ills, sewing division, and distrust. Many immigrant families, despite their contributions, remain under-served, under-represented, and struggling.

So what is life like for immigrant families in our County? Do they feel welcomed and included? And how can we create the conditions in which ALL residents not only survive but thrive?

On May 13th, 2022, the We Belong Team, UCSC students, and community partners organized a resource fair and film screening in the Watsonville City Plaza. It celebrated immigrant families in Santa Cruz County and shared the findings of a 3-year project – We Belong: a Collaboration for Community-based Research and Immigrant Justice.  The project and event were co-hosted by UC Santa Cruz, the Community Action Board of Santa Cruz County, and the Thriving Immigrants Collaborative.
