Themes and Findings
Despite efforts of diversity, Santa Cruz does not always feel welcoming. Belonging is complex and interconnected, and many Latiné mixed-status families describe not feeling a sense of belonging, experiencing and resisting challenges that intertwine with different aspects of their identities. The results of this community-engaged research project include themes that are analytically separated into six prospective categories. [More Info Coming Soon!]
Place and Space Making
Geographic places, such as the Watsonville Plaza or Ramsey Park, and culture and cultural organizations, such as a Youth organization or dance troupe.
Legal Issues, Advocacy, and Criminal Justice
Importance of documentation status of family members, and access to affordable and reliable immigration services.
Economic In/Security
Access to good jobs and income, access to food, access to affordable housing, and access to physical safety.
Family Health and
Well-being
Feeling welcomed and included by relatives, community members, and key community organizations increases access to health services and support.
Access to Education
Language access for non-native English speakers at all levels of schooling, access to educational resources, and pathways to college.
Youth and Rising Generation
Opportunities for children and young adults to create community, access resources, and have organizational support to fulfill their potential.
